Maia
70% of Maia is covered with oceans, divided by several large continents. Maia has small permanent polar ice caps. Most of the planet's cities have formed on coastlines, and many along large rivers, though some large cities have formed inland.
Kobolds are the dominant intelligent species on Maia. Two superpowers have dominated Maia's history, groups of nations known as the "Eastern" and "Western" cultures. The West had a tradition of worshiping a single God, and using "scientific theory" to break down problems into solvable parts. The East had a wider variety of belief systems that were more compatible with each other than they were with Western religion, and had a tradition of integrating different cultures and ideas together to form holistic solutions. Over a few millennia tensions developed between the two superpowers.
These two superpowers tried to peacefully resolve their differences through negotiating a one-world government. However, this new government was not able to get the individual nation states to disarm their nuclear weapons. Eventually a Great War broke out which quickly escalated into an all-out nuclear holocaust. The Great War ended Maia's Western and Eastern civilizations, totally destroying the one-world government. (Archeologists have since discovered that the first "nuclear attack" that started the Great War was not from one of the nation states, but was in fact a large meteorite that happened to hit a large population zone by chance, and that this accident superficially appeared to be a nuclear weapon strike at that time.)
Maia had space travel advanced enough to get to other moons of Midgard for a few centuries before the Great War. During this time Midgard founded two different settlements on Peleg. The first settlement eventually evolved into what is now called "Utopia," and the last settlement is now known as "Xanadu." Utopia was founded by prisoners and political refugees from the West, and Xanadu was founded by conservative idealists from the East.
Decades after the Great War the survivors are forming a new civilization on Maia. Interplanetary forces are watching this development closely, concerned that the violence of the Great War could erupt again and spread to other worlds. This new civilization faces many challenges as they "build from the ashes" including lawlessness, lack of resources, and new social problems.
"Amps" are the main illegal substance. Amps are highly addictive and powerful stimulants used for military purposes before the Great War, and which are now in large supply as massive stockpiles have been unearthed since the Great War.
