Tuesday's link to the new version of MDL2MAP was wrong. It points to the old version. The real new version is at: http://www.fileplanet.com/dl/dl.asp?simitar/mdl2map_19990223.zip

I have released a new version of mdl2map that has a new grid snap feature, and it should no longer depend on the Crystal Space source code. The source and binary are now in one zip file:

http://www.fileplanet.com/dl/dl.asp?simitar/mdl2map_19990220.zip

I have discovered the problem with the bad map file created by the mdl2map convertor: Some of the coordinates are not being written correctly. Incorrect, repeating values for coordinates are being written instead. For example:

 {
  ( -1024.000000 -960.000000 -144.000000 ) ( -1024.000000 -960.000000 -144.000000 ) ( -1024.000000 -960.000000 -144.000000 ) ground1_1 0 0 0 1 1

Unfortunately, I don't know why this is happening and it seems to have different results on different computers. Fortunately, only one model has had this problem so far:

As usual, you can see the mirror sites on the stuff page if the same list of mirrors on the PlanetQuake Download Center page doesn't work. Please let me know if you encounter problems with this program.

I have created a Quake .MDL to Quake .MAP terrain convertor, based on Noote's Quake .MDL to Crystal Space .SPR convertor.

A quake .MDL model is a 3D triangle mesh (like weapons and monsters) and a Quake map is a collection of "convex solids" (aka brushes or polyhedrons) My convertor simply makes a convex solid/brush/polyhedron for each triangle in the .mdl. It assumes that all of the triangles are facing upward, this makes it easy for me to create natural looking terrain models with a MDL editor like qME, then convert them into MAP terrain.

source code - http://www.fileplanet.com/dl/dl.asp?simitar/mdl2map_19990220.zip

DOS binary - http://www.fileplanet.com/dl/dl.asp?simitar/mdl2mapb.zip

If those links don't work, try the mirror sites on my stuff page. Also, the source code still depends on some of the source code from Crystal Space.

I have created one .MDL that won't convert properly into a .map (some of the triangles won't import into any map editor properly), and I haven't figured out why yet. If you want to look at the .MDL or .MAP file yourself, download it from: http://www.fileplanet.com/dl/dl.asp?simitar/brokemap.zip or one of the mirror sites on the stuff page.

Ian Norton sent a request for the Wanted Models Page: " would like a Pikachu Model for Quake2, either that or that shiny driod from star Wars, c3pio, and on top of all those, I would like the trooper from SW. (the white one)"

Crystal Space beta 0.11 release 56 is now available. It should be more stable than the "risky" release 54. The next official release is rapidly approaching!

I received a new request for the Wanted Models Page: "a 'COWBOY' for quake or quake 2. The normal player models with just a cowboy hat on would even work! Preferably Quake1 though." Contact GunSmoke.

David Winter wrote about some models his company needs:

My Company is working on three large projects that require several mdl models. We need a highly animated American style football player (with pads, helmat, etc), a wrestler, and a US marine with weapons. Unlike other projects you may find, we actually have a good budget for these, just no people with experience creating them.

I have added this request to the Wanted Models Page.

Some people have trouble using the "PlanetQuake Download Center" to download files from this site, so I have added a list of PlanetQuake FTP mirrors to the "Stuff" page.

I've been having technical problems for the last three weeks, so I've got to catch up with almost a month's worth of new items that are still relevant to post. Also, I am stuck with Internet Explorer 3.0 for the time being, but at least this will give me a chance to make this site look better in that browser.

Quake Army Knife (QuArK) version 5.5 has been released. It has an OpenGL 3D view (although it does not yet work for all 3D cards), and it is now "free software" using the GNU GPL license. Of course, you are still welcome to pay Armin if you like QuArK and use it - it was always uncrippled shareware. Now it just nags you about free software (as specified in the GPL) instead of shareware :-)

Crystal Space beta 0.11 release 52 is now available. Crystal Space is heading toward a new "official" beta release which should be stable enough to start making games with. In fact Jorrit has released the code for an unfinished 3D tetris-like game he's making.
