Open Quartz Test is #1 ! (22:35 PST) It's rumored that some people here at Galbraith Games are planning a
similar stand alone project with a vastly improved version of Hack
and Slash. It's also rumored that such a project will take a while
to do.
New record for Galbraith Games (23:50 PST) It's rumored that levels from various sources have been donated
to the Open Quartz project. It's also rumored that the
Open Quartz Test Playable Demo may soon be featured on Demo-files.
Cartoon Outline Generator (09:15 PST) New FMP Design (10:00 PST) Black Ops Models (18:30 PST) Free Stuff (18:30 PST) First, the express written permission of the original author is always required. It is often difficult to locate the original authors, especially when dealing with things like Quake skins which might be made from peices of several different artist's work. Second, this permission has to grant all the freedoms required to be compatible with the project, and it must have no extra restrictions. For example, a "non-commercial" license - which is very common for Quake mods - is not compatible with the GPL license of Open Quartz. (If all those "free" Quake mods were free in the sense of "freedom" and not just free as in "free beer", there would be no need for an Open Quartz project.) The Free Models Project accepts models with a variety of different licenses,
even non-commercial. See the FMP Help page
for more information.
New Models? (23:40 PST) This Open Quartz test should be a really big deal to you mod developers out there because it means you can release your mods as independant games that don't require Quake to play, simply by using and packaging Open Quartz as part of the mod instead of requireing the user to play the mod as an add-on. I hope we see alot more stuff like the (and with the) Open Quartz Test in the future. Any how we're working on a Squawk RPG
Bestiary, and there's no telling how long it's going to take, but progress
seems rapid.
Player Sounds (09:30 PST) Encouraging Support (18:15 PST) I hope no one has been offended by the "kill the trees" theme of
this first Open Quartz Test :) (We are not anti-enviornmentalists.) As you all
probably understand, those trees are functionally Quake 1 Zombies.
Open Quartz Stand Alone Demo At Last!! (18:05 PST) We need alot of help with sounds. Not just any sounds, but sounds for which the original author is known and which the author has made GPL or public domain. We're specifically looking for sound effects for weapons, hand to hand combat (and other athletic endeavors) and monsters. Want to use the Open Quartz stuff for you own engine demo (Quake or
other wise)? Go for it! Open Quartz
is totally GPL so thier is nothing we can do about it!
(I'm not even sure if we got Lord Havoc's permision to use
his Dark Places engine in this Demo, but Dark Places is a GPL Quake
variation, so.... There are other GPL Quake variations we could have
used, but Lord Havoc's is our favorite.) Actually, we are hoping that
many will put the Open Quartz content to good use. Furthermore, we
(Galbraith Games) are hopeing that this (Open Quartz generally) will
lead to many of the Quake TCs out there becoming stand alone games
(including a few of our own.)
Squawk/Hack&Slash Overhaul (23:59 PST) Oops! (15:30 PST) Don't forget the
Quake 1 Expo comming up.
Terrain Conversion Tutorial (22:00 PST) Interview with Earnest Adams (15:58 PST) I feel that the biggest problem in videogames today is play control. Why does
a title with so much potential like Alice have Quake 1 playcontrol?
Behold my furious scowl. The Music Suffers, Baby (06:30 PST) I too think it's funny that the media is publishing rosy news about the videogame industry, and proclaiming the death of the PC, but the awful truth is that at least two console platforms have been ditched recently and much of the recent profits reported by some big game companies have come from corporate takeovers and the subsequent squashing of developing games (that we'll never play!) and layoffs for people who are trying to bring a little fun into our lives. Now here's the good news: Galbraith Games is here for the long haul, bringing you fun games without anybody diving out of high rise office buildings, and even empowering you to take charge of your own gaming experience with community projects like the Free Models Project and Open Quartz. Even if our parents kick us out of the basement and we join the Foreign Legion, the fun need not perish with us, thanks to the power of "open source" or Free Software. Have a Happy Easter everybody, Console Rant (00:15 PST)
Not to promote
barney , but I noticed that on one of his videos
he has put out his own console called the "Game Machine."
It works differently than most other consoles, but the point is even
barny the purple un-dino has his own console, which you will find
is pronounced "Gay-Machine" ( I assume this is meant to imply
"happy machines" or "machines to help you feel good about yourself".)
Unfortunately, few Console companies can do any better. I had high hopes
for one these "Gay Machines," called the
Indrema. Unfortunately they have sold out. Now found on thier web site
is the following excuse:"On Friday, April 6, 2001, Indrema Corporation
was terminated. This decision marked the end of a prolonged and unsuccessful
attempt to secure subsequent round funding to support continued operation. Our
vision to empower independent game developers to take control of their future
and redefine the next generation of interactive entertainment lives on in the
hearts of many hopeful and ambitious creators, artists and innovators. The
revolution will continue without Indrema... ". Behold my tears of bitter anger!
The Serpent Lord (who's not as dissapointed as I am) and I agree that the
reason why they sold out was because they were selling out from the get go;
overly corporate, if you will, for a supposedly "open source" oriented project.
Here's what I say a game machine needs for internal hardware: A motherboard,
a sound card, a graphics card including TV capeability, and a CDRW. What?
No DVD? Give me a break. No DVD until DVD RW is available for something
reasonable. Why CD RW? No hard drive, that's why. Boot off the CD RW, that's
what I say. These are machines that would be consoles that could survive the
open source onslaught. Quake 1 expo! (13:51 PST) Face Lift (22:14 PST) My name links :) (19:40 PST) Wanted Models - ALF (17:00 PST) Another Terrain Converter!? (17:00 PST) Prefabs in QuArK tutorial (16:00 PST) Terrain converter finished at last! (23:01 PST) (16:01 PST) |
