Open Quartz Test is #1 ! (22:35 PST)
The Open Quartz Test Playable Demo is officially our #1 most downloaded project we've undertaken to date!

It's rumored that some people here at Galbraith Games are planning a similar stand alone project with a vastly improved version of Hack and Slash. It's also rumored that such a project will take a while to do.

New record for Galbraith Games (23:50 PST)
Our recently released Cartoon Outline Generator is already our #1 downloaded utility, and it hasn't even been out for 48 hours! The Open Quartz Test Playable Demo is very close to being our #1 download of all time, which is encouraging because hopefully it indicates a renewed interest in Quake as a fully functional open source 3D game engine.

It's rumored that levels from various sources have been donated to the Open Quartz project. It's also rumored that the Open Quartz Test Playable Demo may soon be featured on Demo-files.

Cartoon Outline Generator (09:15 PST)
I made a little Cartoon Outline Generator utility. This utility adds extra polygons to a model to make it look like it has a cartoon outline. It currently only works on MilkShape 3D models exported in MilkShape 3D ASCII format. These models can be imported into MilkShape 3D and then exported as models for many popular 3D games.

New FMP Design (10:00 PST)
I have redesigned the Free Models Project pages, adding a framed menu for browsing models. The menu can be sorted by the model's name, author or license. This new design should make it easier to browse the FMP collections.

Black Ops Models (18:30 PST)
The Lieutenant has sent a whole bunch of models from his Black Ops TC. These models can be used for any purpose as long as The Lieutenant receives credit and you include a link to http://www.planetquake.com/commandhq

More free models and textures can be found at the Free Models Project.

Free Stuff (18:30 PST)
Thanks for your positive responses to our Open Quartz Test! If you would like to contribute free stuff for the Free Models Project, Open Quartz or other "open source" games, you should keep a couple of things in mind:

First, the express written permission of the original author is always required. It is often difficult to locate the original authors, especially when dealing with things like Quake skins which might be made from peices of several different artist's work.

Second, this permission has to grant all the freedoms required to be compatible with the project, and it must have no extra restrictions.

For example, a "non-commercial" license - which is very common for Quake mods - is not compatible with the GPL license of Open Quartz. (If all those "free" Quake mods were free in the sense of "freedom" and not just free as in "free beer", there would be no need for an Open Quartz project.)

The Free Models Project accepts models with a variety of different licenses, even non-commercial. See the FMP Help page for more information.

New Models? (23:40 PST)
I heard we got some new models for the FMP. Probably more on that tomorrow. The Open Quartz Test has about 390 downloads, but tommorow the announcment will be off the front news page of Planet Quake and it will be interesting to see how much it slows down.

This Open Quartz test should be a really big deal to you mod developers out there because it means you can release your mods as independant games that don't require Quake to play, simply by using and packaging Open Quartz as part of the mod instead of requireing the user to play the mod as an add-on. I hope we see alot more stuff like the (and with the) Open Quartz Test in the future.

Any how we're working on a Squawk RPG Bestiary, and there's no telling how long it's going to take, but progress seems rapid.

Player Sounds (09:30 PST)
In response to Friday's release of the Open Quartz Test Alister Jackson created 31 new player sounds! These sounds can be used for any purpose without restriction, but of course Ali would appreciate it if you give him credit for the sounds. (To use these player sounds in the Open Quartz test, put these sounds in a new folder named "player" in the "sound" folder which is in the "oq" folder.)

Encouraging Support (18:15 PST)
Planet Quake gave us great coverage on the Open Quartz Test release yesterday (down load and try the Open Quarts test now if you haven't already.) I think about 250 people have tried it within it's first 24 hours of release. One such person was good enough to donate a great number of quality "player" sounds....

I hope no one has been offended by the "kill the trees" theme of this first Open Quartz Test :) (We are not anti-enviornmentalists.) As you all probably understand, those trees are functionally Quake 1 Zombies.

Open Quartz Stand Alone Demo At Last!! (18:05 PST)
We now have a stand alone Open Quartz Test that you don't even have to have Quake to play! (Make sure you read the oq.txt file once you unzip the download, before you play. FYI: It's the oq.bat file that starts the game.)

We need alot of help with sounds. Not just any sounds, but sounds for which the original author is known and which the author has made GPL or public domain. We're specifically looking for sound effects for weapons, hand to hand combat (and other athletic endeavors) and monsters.

Want to use the Open Quartz stuff for you own engine demo (Quake or other wise)? Go for it! Open Quartz is totally GPL so thier is nothing we can do about it! (I'm not even sure if we got Lord Havoc's permision to use his Dark Places engine in this Demo, but Dark Places is a GPL Quake variation, so.... There are other GPL Quake variations we could have used, but Lord Havoc's is our favorite.) Actually, we are hoping that many will put the Open Quartz content to good use. Furthermore, we (Galbraith Games) are hopeing that this (Open Quartz generally) will lead to many of the Quake TCs out there becoming stand alone games (including a few of our own.)

Squawk/Hack&Slash Overhaul (23:59 PST)
Believe it or not one of our main projects has been updating and re-doing the Squawk Role-Playing Game and Hack and Slash Role-Playing System. Now we have updated this our page with our latest work, and it's much improved! Some of the new Squawk features include 2 new worlds (Paradise and Trydeen,) and 2 new races (Basilisks and Minotaurs.) The Hack and Slash Role-Playing System rules have been updated to what we are currently using.

Terrain Conversion Tutorial (22:00 PST)
Here is a tutorial for the raw2map raw bitmap to Quake .map format terrain convertor. It should explain how to save an image as an 8 bit uncompressed .tga file, how to convert it to a .map using raw2map, and how to use the utility's various options.

Interview with Earnest Adams (15:58 PST)
The New York Times has put up an interview with Ernest Adams about his Dogma 2001 Video Game Manifesto. The Serpent Lord and I for the most part agreed strongly with his manifesto. We've never made just a "first person shooter." Even in our up comming release Friday, we are supporting optional camera options (woops, was I supposed to tell anyone?) The fact is that allthough there are alot of good 1st person shooters out there (Half Life and Quake 3 are my favorite 1st person shooters,) I now personally refuse to play any game (besides Quake 1,) that requires you to use more than one of the following simultaneously: look, strafe and move.

I feel that the biggest problem in videogames today is play control. Why does a title with so much potential like Alice have Quake 1 playcontrol? Behold my furious scowl.

The Music Suffers, Baby (06:30 PST)
"... the music business thrives."
Quite a rant from "Furious B." yesterday!

I too think it's funny that the media is publishing rosy news about the videogame industry, and proclaiming the death of the PC, but the awful truth is that at least two console platforms have been ditched recently and much of the recent profits reported by some big game companies have come from corporate takeovers and the subsequent squashing of developing games (that we'll never play!) and layoffs for people who are trying to bring a little fun into our lives.

Now here's the good news: Galbraith Games is here for the long haul, bringing you fun games without anybody diving out of high rise office buildings, and even empowering you to take charge of your own gaming experience with community projects like the Free Models Project and Open Quartz.

Even if our parents kick us out of the basement and we join the Foreign Legion, the fun need not perish with us, thanks to the power of "open source" or Free Software.

Have a Happy Easter everybody,
and may the Source be with you!

Console Rant (00:15 PST)
Before I go on I just want to remind eveyone of the Quake 1 Expo comming up.

Not to promote barney , but I noticed that on one of his videos he has put out his own console called the "Game Machine." It works differently than most other consoles, but the point is even barny the purple un-dino has his own console, which you will find is pronounced "Gay-Machine" ( I assume this is meant to imply "happy machines" or "machines to help you feel good about yourself".)

Unfortunately, few Console companies can do any better. I had high hopes for one these "Gay Machines," called the Indrema. Unfortunately they have sold out. Now found on thier web site is the following excuse:"On Friday, April 6, 2001, Indrema Corporation was terminated. This decision marked the end of a prolonged and unsuccessful attempt to secure subsequent round funding to support continued operation. Our vision to empower independent game developers to take control of their future and redefine the next generation of interactive entertainment lives on in the hearts of many hopeful and ambitious creators, artists and innovators. The revolution will continue without Indrema... ". Behold my tears of bitter anger!

The Serpent Lord (who's not as dissapointed as I am) and I agree that the reason why they sold out was because they were selling out from the get go; overly corporate, if you will, for a supposedly "open source" oriented project.

Here's what I say a game machine needs for internal hardware: A motherboard, a sound card, a graphics card including TV capeability, and a CDRW. What? No DVD? Give me a break. No DVD until DVD RW is available for something reasonable. Why CD RW? No hard drive, that's why. Boot off the CD RW, that's what I say. These are machines that would be consoles that could survive the open source onslaught.

Another Terrain Converter!? (17:00 PST)
Yes, it's true, the Serpent Lord has actually made a different terrain converter. This one actually "makes terrain maps in Quake .map format from simple triangle models." A useful tool indeed for the Quake level developer: tri2map terrain converter.

(16:01 PST)
Open Quartz has 86 new "public domain" sounds from pOx's Free Quake Media page. There are also good free texture wads there, although there is one modified id Software sky texture to watch out for.
