Progress: Chase Camera (23:15 PST)
We have made progress in the direction of having a stand alone Hack and Slash game. Specificly, we now have a chase camera running in a recent version of the Quake Forge quake world engine. This is a significant mile stone towards getting a decent stand alone version of Hack and Slash together.

Ho Ho Ho! (2:30 PST)
I can't believe our internet problems were actually caused by that silly Code Red worm, but it seems to be what happened. Anyway, the good news is that the problem should be fixed and some new files are available for Open Quartz fans:

The latest release comes in two flavors:

oq-pak0-2001.08.07.zip has all the source files used to build the latest Open Quartz pak files. (Building the pak files requires the latest Open Quartz compiling utilities.) It also includes Aardappel's maps, so if you want to help the Open Quartz project by replacing the proprietary textures used in those maps get this version.

On the other hand if you just want the latest Open Quartz graphics and sounds, grab oq-pak0-bin-2001.08.07.zip which just contains the pak files and the maps that already use free textures. (This is just the game data, if you need an executable, you can try the Open Quartz test or another engine based on the GPL Quake source.)

Will Do News For Food (12:00 PST)
The Serpent Lord told me to do a news update for today on an animation article I didn't even read yet. Then I said "No way man! My hair is who i am!", but then he offered me frozen HOHOs! So here it is. There is an article on animation for those of you interested in animating models at gamasutra.

Trouble in River City (19:00 PST)
We've had nothing but trouble with the internet during the last week, perhaps because someone "forgot" to pay the phone bill - or at least to pay the amount "suggested" by the company.

Meanwhile we've made some progress on Open Quartz, and we're working on some stuff behind the scenes toward building enhanced game engines for the next Open Quartz test and stand-alone Hack and Slash game.

Open Quartz Utilities (19:00 PST)
Without reliable internet access it's difficult to upload really big files to SourceForge, so the latest Open Quartz files are still only accessible by CVS, but you can download a new version of the Open Quartz compiling utilities - featuring new versions of modelgen, qlumpy and sprgen which build Quake .mdl, .lmp, .wad and .spr files from png files. Yeah, well don't say I never gave you nothing. Download the qutils package from the Open Quartz project page at SourceForge.

Hi! (20:15 PST)
We have been hard at work getting a stand alone version of Hack and Slash off the ground. There's no end in sight soon, but things are under way.
