Back in business (21:25 PST)
Well, we have finally recovered from our massive hardware failures, this
time with uninterruptable power supplies. How ever, we discovered our office
has a tighter limit to the number of computers we can house than we thought
(because of faulty wireing.) So now we are using only 2/3rds the number of computers
we were before the hardware problems.

Character Wizard (21:10 PST)
The Serpent Lord has been working on a character wizard
for Squawk. The wizard was made as a fast way to develop Squawk characters.
This is only the first version released, and there will be updates to the
wizard.

Goth Epidemic (21:45 PST)
Work on Open Quartz
has been slow recently - Galbraith Games has been focusing on Hack
and Slash, but The Serpent Lord has been experimenting with installing
Open Quartz from a CD. Perhaps another Open Quartz release is in the
near future?

Happy Pranksgiving (20:55 PST)
I hope you all stuffed your guts with lethal amounts of turkey, I know
I did. Hopefully they didn't drop frozen care turkeys on Afganistan.

GAMECUBE Cuts Xbox (18:50 PST)
GAMECUBE bites Xbox in the face, selling over twice as many GAMECUBEs
than Xboxes. Plus people are
buying GAMECUBE games like mad, buying on average two to three games.
It looks to me like Nintendo is smashing Microsoft in the console market
with their superior product. Send all your angsty teenage hate mail
here.

D&D in Space (10:55 PST)
I'm a Star Wars fan, and I'm a gamer. I was a big fan of the Star Wars
RPG. The original Star Wars RPG system and GURPS had the most influence
on Hack and Slash of any Role-Playing Systems, although Hack and Slash
is based on two ideas that are not extensively dealt with in these
systems (well, maybe by their standards but not ours,) which is: #1 the
effects of different sizes in combat and #2 the effect of damage on
performance in combat. The emphasis on these two factors made our Hack
and Slash Role-Playing System not just unique, but totally different
from any of the other Role-Playing Systems out there from the very
beginning.
Some time in the last few years, Wizards of the Coast made a very wise
move that I don't approve. They adapted the Star Wars RPG to the D20 system
("open source" D&D system.) Personally I think they should have "open sourced"
the original Star Wars RPG system and used it for D&D instead of the other
way around. However, at least they have A) made the most common RPG system out
there useable, useful and "open source", and B) are using it to reduce the
learning curve of other RPGs.

Game Cube in Seattle (12:40 PST)
Yesterday Zancrus, The Serpent Lord, and I went to the Emerald City (which
isn't realy emerald, its more of a grey and brown Quake one pallette, with
some horrible colored lighting) to check out a
Game Cube presentation. Turns
out Eternal Darkness didn't make me spew in disgust, but it was
still a resident evil wannabe, with a lame camera and awful play control.
Plus there was NBA Courtside 2002 with just crap for graphics.
Then I got to play Super Smash Brothers Melee and whooped up on some suckas.
It is much faster in melee which causes some difficulty at first. I also played
Pikmin which I thought had awesome play control that successfully took advantage
of the two analog sticks.

A whole new low (22:25 PST)
I don't know if any of you have been unfortunate enough to see the latest
copy of Game Developer Magazine, but in the "post mortem" they don't even
have a single screen shot. The Game Developer mag is really falling apart.
But the worst thing about them is they have allways been in denial about
the most lacking aspect of games these days: play control.

What is Squawk (15:15 PST)
We have added a What is Squawk section
to the Squawk page. It explains important details on
its ownership and how it is to be used.

Page Update (16:25 PST)
The members page has been updated, appointing
me as the official news monger. In case you were wondering, BFGalbraith wasnt kicked
out for being a G83S H83R, he is still an assistant web master.

Gateisms (22:45 PST)
It turns out that
Windose XP has a little problem with Quake. Does this have anything to do with
the fact the Quake is open source and Microsoft officially opposes open source? If not,
what an incrimidating coincidence! And if it is a coincidence, it really makes me wonder
just how poorly Microsoft's other game platforms are going to perform, coincidentally.

On the menu... (10:05 PST)
Today we have been and will be working on the much anticipated and needed
Hack and Slash Computer Game menu system. Considerable progress has already been
made. Amoung numerous other things, this will be used for weapon selection.
(However, we don't have any kind of bolt-on weapon system like Qbism
or Counter Strike (Half Life) .) :(

Update (16:25 PST)
I am sure it will come as no suprise to the regular readers of this page
that we have updated the Hack and Slash Role Playing System and Computer
Game Project Documentation. I've clarified the teaching rule, and we now
have some details about using CVS.

Weekly Hits (10:35 PST)
We had about 430 hits this week (from 10 AM on the 31st to 10:15 AM today,
for a total of 1,746.) 430 is a pretty typical week for this page this last month.
Game Spy's counters are fairly conservative, so we know this is only counting somewhat
solid visits.

Election Day (17:50 PST)
It's state election day where most of us at Galbraith Games are at.
It's very important to vote when you have the opportunity, to show
that you support and want to have a say in your local government. The
Serpent Lord says "freedom is what free software is all about."
The only serious debate to break out here at Galbraith Games recently
was between the hard core Game Cube Smash Brothers fans and the hard core
War Craft III fans, and the argument was about which game was cooler to
be a dedicated fan for. We came to the startling conclusion that Hack and
Slash intends to not be a cross between these two games, but to eventually
have the best qualities of these two games.

Good news and bad news (22:25 PST)
I have updated the fixed teaching rule in the Hack and Slash Role-Playing System. I have also added
a version number to the H&S RPS front page,
which BTW will is the date of the last modification so that folks can tell if they
are using our latest version.
Between these last two big worms taking us to the cleaners (because of
our Windows dependancy and our old DSL modem,) and our lack of a UPS and some
nasty weather and power surges here, we've lost litterally two thirds of our
computers in the last few weeks. When you are operating on 0 fundage like us,
this is very hard to recover from. I'm not sure how far this is going to set
us back.

Regeneration (12:25 PST)
I have fixed the very broken regeneration rule in the Hack and Slash Role-Playing System,
so that now it is at least useable. It is now basically what
we've actually been using. The next thing we need
to fix is the teaching rule (in the abilities section.)

Progress/docs (11:45 PST)
We've made some progress using cygwin to get the current H&S
engine (QuakeForge) running in Windose. We've also updated our H&S docs accordingly.

Windose (23:15 PST)
Lately we've been working on getting the new Hack and Slash game to work
in Windows. This does not mean we have finished the other steps, (we
haven't,) it's just that getting it to run in Windows has just been moved a
little higher on our priority list.

October Review (10:45 PST)
Last month there was a
NEW QBISM RELEASE, two Galbraith Games members had birthdays, we
updated the
Hack and Slash Computer Game Documents, we started using a counter
to monitor trafic on this main Galbraith Games front page, Zancrus put up
his site, and there was a new
Crystal Space release,
not necessarily in that order. More...
Did I mention the NEW QBISM RELEASE?
