Need for Kings (11:20 PST)
Ryan needs help with getting his hands on some 3D models. He found some of the ones he needs, like a balista, on the Free Models Project but he still needs help finding a "footman, dwarf, paladin, mage, cleric, king and an archer."

I met Mete (17:00 PST)
A few days after I e-mailed the creator of Milk Shape and posted the news "Meet Mete," he e-mailed me to notify me that our requested modifications are officially on his to-do list. Please do e-mail him with thanks and encouragment if you feel so inclined :)

Gates of Hell (16:30 PST)
A musician friend of ours helping with the Squawk project is having a bit of trouble finding some linux CDRW drivers for his HP 8220e. If you you have any information on this please e-mail me about it. Click here to see his rant and an explanation of what is exactly meant by "the Gates of Hell."

Meet Mete (18:50 PST)
Mete Ciragan, mete@swissquake.ch, is the creator of MilkShape 3D, a shareware 3D modeling and animation program many Windows users are now using to make models for various games (It has a half-life style skeletal animation system but can export to Quake and Quake 2 models).

I need him to implement exporting individual model frames in .cad format so I can compile them into high-precision models (with 16 bit microscopic precision instead of 8 bit jell-o precision.) I've already e-mailed him about it so if you want to add your vote, you could just e-mail him and say "Please implement .cad frame export described by Seth Galbraith ('The Serpent Lord') for his high precision modelgen utility."

89 GPL textures (15:10 PST)
MikeeUSA has released a collection of 89 GPL textures: "I made some GPL'd textures, they were originally intended for Crystal Space and some are 256x256 (too big... bust out tha gimp n cap it dowhn to size!) and a few are uncommon dimentions (100x100, 128x100) so resize if nessary :) There are 89 (as far as i know... hand counted) textures, all png files." You can download the texture's here or check out the full list of free texture collections on the Free Game Arts page.

Fear The Serpent Lord (14:05 PST)
The Serpent Lord has implemented the high precision model support in the QuakeForge engine, and he has removed the hard-coded vertex and triangle limits from that engine, so some pretty ridiculous models are now possible.

Full Circle (18:00 PST)
Well, after some success with Red Hat, we ended up having some major problems with version 7.3 freezing up on us. So we tried SUsE, but it wanted to play ring-around-the-roses when we went to install it. Since our hardware problems are under control, we decided to try Corel again. Corel Linux is working like a charm. Corel Linux is King!

Summary of 2001 (21:30 PST)
Here's some of what the great Serpent Lord mentioned as memorable events of the year 2001:

  • From the efforts of many awesome volunteers, the Open Quartz project produces a fairly complete multiplayer game with Free content for the GPL Quake engine
  • Quake for Pocket PCs makes Pocket Hack and Slash possible
  • New wave British heavy metal masters Iron Maiden release excellent new album, Brave New World. (Tell your parents it's educational)
  • Our Squawk Role-Playing Game gets a facelift and new content
  • We finally start to see feathered dinosaurs on television, movies lag
  • What evil lurks in the hearts of GameSpy? Users of FilePlanet know
  • Free Game Arts site launched featuring all sorts of free content.
  • Zancrus launches his new 3D oriented website
  • Wizards of the Coast makes Dungeons & Dragons rules "open source" (but won't allow complete games using the rules to state that they are compatible with Wizards's trademark game or system)
  • Galbraith Games releases a new version of the Hack and Slash Role-Playing System.
  • Tux Box Project rises as a new contender for Linux based game console after Indrema died as the "e-business" stock crash took it's toll

  • New self-installing Open Quartz game

    File Links Fixed (16:30 PST)
Many of our download links suddenly stopped working, but they seem to work now that we've updated them to point to www.fileplanet.com instead of asp.planetquake.com

    December Review (23:35 PST)
During the holidays, Galbraith Games released an Open Quartz self-installing game and a new version of the free Hack and Slash Role-Playing System. We also showed off an early Squawk Character Generation Wizard. Last month we also enjoyed playing Nintendo GameCube and seeing the incredible new Lord of the Rings movie. And don't forget how Red Hat testified against Microsoft before the U.S. Senate, and the Tux Box Project began moving again.
