To B or not to B (22:30 PST) I think Wizards of the Coast needs a "head check" when
it comes to thier aditude towards "open
source." For example, in this
recent article posted on the D20
website, the following comments are made: "There
are a lot of people at Wizards of the Coast who are
already a little leery about this whole "Open Gaming"
thing..." "I do think it's unfortunate that ...
publishers are choosing to use a
new license and not use the OGL." "Right now ...
short of a complete open-source release, the OGL
cannot be effectively used in software."
So the OGL isn't a "complete open-source release?" I
guess that could cause some leeriness indeed. It
causes leeriness in me, now that it's public.
(FYI: The OGL is going to require that you mention
that rules are compatable with D&D. Problem: If I let
someone make Squawk materials using D20 rules, they
will have to mention D&D in somewhere in those
materials, thus forcing me to casturate them with my
heavy, rusty shovel. This means no Squawk D20 stuff
any time soon.)

D20 Generator (21:30 PST)
If you use the D20 game system, you gotta check out
this project: pcgen.sourceforge.net. I think
it's beyond cool that they are developing an open
source Java based character generator for the much
esteemed open source D20 Role-Playing System.

Nothing But Rumors (17:55 PST)
We recently registered Zombie Smashers X. It is great. I highly
recomend registering your copy. I heard a rumor that the
Zombie Smashers X
guy tried the Hack and Slash Action RPG computer game test. This
is cool for Galbraith Games, because most of us are Zombie Smashers X fans. (We've been spending more time playing ZSX than anything else.)
I also heard a rumor that we (Galbraith Games) may do a stand alone
Squawk computer game test in the near future. We have a very serious
Brian Hess, who you may have heard of, doing the music for Squawk.

Massive Update (19:55 PST)
I have updated the Hack and Slash docs with some information from The
Serpent Lord's "The Future of Hack and Slash." "The Future of Hack and
Slash" was sort of his "last request" concerning the Hack and Slash
Action RPG, and was forwarded to both Hack and Slash mailing lists a
few weeks ago. Anyhow, if you are wondering where we want to take the
Hack and Slash Action RPG in the immediate future, the
Hack and Slash docs are now a good
place to start.

Important Question (8:10 PST)
I have a very important question for all of you. What
is the best "open source" 3D modeling program out there
for games? By "best" I mean how actively it is being
developed. (We help give alot of advice and input to Milkshape
3D, much to Mete's advantage, and we'de like to lend this
same help to the most progressive open source 3D modeling
effort, what ever that is.) If you have a strong opinion
about which open source modeling project is the best,
please e-mail me and let me know soon.

Arcade Un-news (11:20 PST)
(Apparently interest in the movie
Tron has picked up, &
I was fascinated by the idea of a programmer
making games for the arcade below his apartment.)
From what I've heard, the old school arcade is dying
while the pay by the hour PC game lounge is prospering.
Could a
piece of hardware like this be used
to merge the game lounge and arcade? Could
you put a stand up arcade box and put a PC in it? No
coins? Go with a 'lounge $olution. Everyone wants to play
the same game and there are not enough machines? Make all
games available on all machines. (Through LAN,
also enhancing multi-player options?)

QuakeForge/FGA/Qbism (15:45 PST)
QuakeForge has moved to a new location, http://www.quakeforge.net.
This is the 1st time I've heard of project moving off of SourceForge,
don't get me wrong, I'm sure it's happened before. It reminds me of
when we tried to get the Free Game Arts page (our most neglected
project) on SourceForge, but alas, our licences on the Free Models
Project was not updated enough for sf.net (They have worked out nicely
for the H&S Action RPG test however.) This is because we put up the
Free Models Project before we knew the meaning of the word "GPL."
Speaking of the Free Game Arts page, I recently added Qbism to the
engine list (that was about as over due as our H&S test release.)
Speaking of Qbism, they recently did Hack and Slash news.

Seth enters MTC (17:35 PST)
Seth "The Serpent Lord" Galbraith has finally achieved his life long
dream of "going on a mission." I know what your thinking, "what the
...?" What's important is that he could be "unavailable" for up to two
years. He's still the "backbone" of Galbraith Games, but communication
with him is now very slow. (Anyway, you can find out more
information about this if you dig around on our "contact" page.) Don't
worry, I did the same thing when I was his age and I'm back in action
now, even if I'm not as useful as the mighty Serpent Lord. (Honestly,
it was one of the coolest things I ever did, I learned a lot, did a
lot of very interesting things, and had a great time.)
sgalbrai@krl.org is no longer a valid way to contact Seth, in fact he
has me checking that e-mail account for him now, and that account will
be shutting down within a year. In the case of an emergency, fastest
way to get a message to/from him is through me, and even then it could
take a month to get a reply from him. We do expect a triumphant return
of the Serpent Lord in within the next few years.

H&S Add banner is out (12:00 PST)
Well, our Hack and Slash Action RPG / Galbraith Games add banner
should be popping up randomly on GameSpy sites any time now :) We
actually made this banner a long time ago when we 1st thought we'de
have the Hack and Slash Action RPG test out within a month (last summer if I remember correctly.)
